Alberta Transportation strongly encourages new drivers to take a professional driver education training course. Classroom and practical, behind-the-wheel†instruction is provided by qualified driver instructors. These instructors are authorized by Alberta Transportation under the Driver Training and Driver Examination Regulation. Professional driver education and†training provides new drivers with the knowledge and skills necessary to become capable, proactive and responsible drivers throughout their driving careers.
Driver education consists of training for licence Classes 1 through 7. Within this there are programs designed specifically to assist primarily professional drivers. The Commercial Driver Training Programs provide education about air brakes, school buses, long combination vehicles, and driver improvement courses.

Air Brake Program
The Alberta Air Brake Program provides drivers with information on how to operate vehicles equipped with air brakes. It must be completed and the air brake ďQĒ endorsement added to your Alberta operatorís licence before operating vehicles equipped with air brakes. The program was introduced in 1990 and updated in 2012.
If you have an air brake Notice of Driver Education Completion form (TRANS or DPLS00047) and have not used it to apply the Q endorsement to your Alberta operatorís licence you must do so prior to July 10, 2012.† The information in the links below provides additional information on the transition between the old and updated program.
