New Generation Wide Base Single Tires
Since July 2016, Alberta Transportation has allowed the use of increased axle weights with New Generation Wide Base Single Tires as part of a pilot project. The results of that pilot show a significant improvement in fuel efficiency—almost 10 per cent— when compared with trucks with dual-tire configurations.
Improved fuel efficiency not only benefits commercial transport operators, but also means a reduction in harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
As of July 1, 2017, Alberta Transportation began allowing 455 millimetre NGWBST to operate under permit with no per-kilometre fee on provincial highways at loads equivalent to those allowed with dual-tire configurations.
